High-Level event on Emerging Challenges and Shifting Paradigms at UNGA 73

[New York, September 2018]

At the 73rdUnited Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister of Aruba Evelyn Wever-Croes attended a high-level event on Emerging Challenges and Shifting Paradigms: New Perspectives on International co-operation for development, organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the European Union and the Development Centre of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The meeting was inaugurated by UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed and included high-ranking authorities as speakers. This event consisted of a high-level debate on evolving concepts regarding development cooperation, with an emphasis on the emerging concept of “development in transition”, which refers to the effort to move forward on attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and act on implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes elaborated on Aruba’s human-centered approach to tackle the structural challenges in the financial, social, economic and environmental areas on the island. At the event, global leaders debated on how to ensure that international relations be more relevant, receptive and suited to the aim of “leaving no one behind”. The concept of development in transition has special importance for Latin America and the Caribbean, a region in which the majority of countries are achieving higher income levels but continue to confront structural challenges.
